The New MySpace

I don't have any words for this... save.... WOW!  You really have to check out the demo for yourself at http://new.myspace.com .  With a seemingly great design and distilled focus, I think this has some legs.  Can great design and functionality trump years of brand decay?  I guess we'll see, I signed up... … [Read more...]

Shattered RIM, Blackberry Teeters on Its Hinges

Shattered RIM

RIM recently reported a net loss of $0.37 per share, sales decline of 42%, the layoff of 5,000 employees before EOY, and a delay of Blackberry OS 10.  The company lost $518MM and shipped 41% fewer devices.  If you ask RIM, better days are just on the horizon, but I think we've all heard this story again, and again.  However, with no viable strategy for the future - its only a matter of time until the whole thing comes down tumbling down. … [Read more...]

Google Nexus Q Boggles

Going head to head with Apple, Sony, Samsung, and Microsoft; Google hatches the Nexus Q streaming media orb to bring Google Play content directly into your living room.  Despite its Alien-like appearance - the android based media hub allows you to stream songs, photos, video, etc.  This sucker weighs in at 2 lbs (whoa) and boasts wifi, bluetooth, NFC, and a 25 watt amp.  Very cool, but would you pay $299 for this egg? … [Read more...]

Sony’s Deadly Strike: Kazuo Hirai’s Restructuring Plan Includes Cutting 10,000 Positions

SonysDeadlyStrike

Sony CEO, Kazuo Hirai announced that Sony will be cutting 6% of its workforce due to their restructuring plans.  They plan to roll this out over the next two years, extending into March 2014.  We were kind of expecting this with many of Sony's business units fluttering and the reinvestment into Sony's TV operations with Hirai cutting an entire layer of management so he can more effectively have visibility into their televisions business. Kazuo is trying to make Sony as nimble as Bruce Li - even though they still have 162,000 Global employees - whoa. … [Read more...]

Nokia Lumia 900 from AT&T Launching Easter Sunday – Is it the Cyan Savior?

Nokia Lumia 900 Easter

When the new Nokia Lumia 900 from AT&T launches on Easter Sunday, Nokia executives are expecting big week one sales numbers.  In fact, they were so bold as to claim that the Lumia 900 week one sales will surpass 4 Million units sold, that would top the iPhone 4's first week of sales.  Except, there will be no lines outside of stores, no big unveiling, no 6 hour wait, no extra staff to handle crowds - oh yea - that's because the only person working on Sunday is the Easter Bunny as all AT&T stores will be closed for the holiday. While there is no doubt that this phone is a much needed breath of fresh air for the smartphone market - and that it is priced very well at $99 - and that it is marketed effectively - and that it has a great OS - I could go on.  But, at the end of the day, Nokia has to hope that the Easter Bunny will deliver this Cyan Savior in a few chocolate eggs. … [Read more...]

Scott Thompson Terminates 2,000 Yahoo Employees

Scott Thompson Terminat0r

Yahoo CEO, Scott Thompson, Terminates 2000 employees due to 'restructuring'.  This comes on the heels of a desperate patent lawsuit against Facebook and subsequent countersuit against the bloated internet giant.  It looks like Scott Thompson's new strategy is cutting costs and stealing money from other companies.  To quote Scott in his note to employees: "We are intensifying our efforts on our core businesses and redeploying resources to our most urgent priorities. Our goal is to get back to our core purpose – putting our users and advertisers first – and we are moving aggressively to achieve that goal." Translated to: "We don't have any real competitive advantage anymore, so we have to worry about money - and our most urgent priority is this damn lawsuit, because Facebook called our bluff.  So, everyone is going to have to work a lot harder because, I just fired 2,000 … [Read more...]

Groupon Deal

Five months after going public, Groupon's stock price is trading at scrutinizingly low prices due to improperly allocating funds for Q4 refunds.  Today, the company had to reduce it's reported revenue by another 3%, which prompted their stock price to slump an 13%.  Needless to say they are under scrutiny by the SEC.  Especially because of this new deal they are running, Groupon is issuing a Groupon on itself - 54% off!  Only $6 Billion! … [Read more...]
